If you are planning to plan a trip to Sri Lanka, what time of the year should you travel? This is a question many of my readers ask me. First of all, thank you for reading my blog!
What is the best time to plan a Sri Lanka holiday?
Here’s what you need to know about the best time to visit Sri Lanka:
The country has two main seasons: dry and rainy. The dry season runs from February to April, and the rainy season lasts from May to November.
Locations that are near beaches, such as Negombo, Mirissa, and Hikkaduwa, have tropical climates. In these areas, you’ll have sunny days and humidity of over 95% all year long.
Tropical monsoon climates prevail in Sri Lankan cities such as Colombo, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya. These areas are hot during the day and cold at night. In Kandy, for example, you’ll experience temperatures from 18 °C (64 °F) at night to 25 °C (77°F) in the daytime.
The rest of Sri Lanka has a tropical wet-and-dry climate. Temperatures here are warm during the day and cold at night. Lahugala is a good example of this climate type. In January, for instance, you’ll see average temperatures ranging from 26 °C (78°F) during the day down to 20 °C (68°F) at night.

Sri Lanka is recognized as the Indian Ocean’s jewel, and it is a popular tourist destination all year. Tourists may participate in a variety of activities when visiting this beautiful Indian Ocean nation.
The weather in Sri Lanka can vary throughout the year, so it is important that tourists plan their trip according to what time of the year they would like to visit. One of the best times to visit this country is during November because the weather is nice, free from rain and there are fewer crowds at the popular beaches. Tourists are recommended to avoid visiting this nation from May to September since the weather is hot and there is a probability of rain.
The average temperature in Sri Lanka ranges between 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit (21-24 degrees Celsius), making it a nice destination in all seasons except for February when it is quite cold with temperatures going down to 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius). The best period for tourists to visit this country would be from December through March, when the temperature ranges from 74-79 degrees Fahrenheit (23-26 degrees Celsius).
Tourists who wish to avoid crowds should plan their trip during November, December, and January when there are fewer travelers visiting this beautiful place.

If you’re planning your visit around the weather, it’s worth noting that the best time to travel to Sri Lanka is between November and February. That said, I’ve visited in the middle of the monsoon season (which falls between May and August) and found plenty to do and see (and eat!).

What to Wear in Sri Lanka
The weather in Sri Lanka can be both hot and humid. If you’re visiting during the summer months, be prepared for a high of around 35°C (95°F) or higher. Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing that dries quickly, like jeans or khakis with a tank top or t-shirt. Make sure your shirt has long sleeves — mosquitoes love exposed skin!
November is a very good time to visit Sri Lanka. It is a nice month with moderate weather and lots of sunshine. It is pretty much the transition month to the real monsoon season, but it is not as humid as May or June. The rains start in December, so this month can be considered ideal for planning a holiday in Sri Lanka. You will enjoy warm sunny days and cool evenings. However, there are chances of some showers also, but they are not that frequent. Temperatures range between 20-30 degrees Celsius during the day and 15-20 degrees Celsius at night. The sun shines most of the day brightly, but you can expect some rain in the evening or early morning when you travel around the country.

Sri Lanka has a warm tropical climate, which means that the weather is generally pleasant throughout the year. The country lies on the Indian Ocean, and sea breezes cool down the temperature in the hot seasons. The temperature reaches its peak from April to June and from September to November.
The monsoon season, which begins in May, brings heavy rainfalls to Sri Lanka. The rainfalls are usually short-lived and occur only during the evenings.
During the rest of the year, it is very hot in Sri Lanka. During summer days, it can even rise up to 36 degrees Celsius. This makes the period between November and April the best months to travel to Sri Lanka.
